Five years ago, Chinese cars were barely a footnote in the UAE market. Today, they're everywhere — MG, Chery, Haval, Changan, GAC, Jetour, and more are competing aggressively on price and features. As a mechanic who now sees these cars regularly at Powerworks, I want to give you an honest, balanced view of what we're seeing.
The Good News
I'll give credit where it's due — Chinese cars have improved dramatically:
- Features per dirham: No one offers more standard equipment for the price. A AED 65,000 Chinese SUV often comes with features you'd pay AED 120,000+ for from a Japanese or Korean brand.
- Build quality has improved: Panel gaps, paint quality, and interior materials on the latest models (2023-2026) are genuinely decent.
- Warranty coverage: Many Chinese brands offer 5-7 year warranties in the UAE, which shows confidence in their products.
- EV technology: Chinese manufacturers like BYD are genuinely ahead of many traditional brands in electric vehicle technology.
The Concerns (From a Mechanic's Workshop)
Here's what I'm seeing when these cars come through our doors:
- Parts availability: This is the biggest issue. When something breaks, parts can take 2-6 weeks to arrive — sometimes longer. European car parts arrive within days because the supply chain is established.
- Diagnostic access: Independent garages often struggle to access Chinese car diagnostic systems. The software is proprietary and not widely available outside dealer networks.
- Electrical gremlins: We're seeing more electrical issues than mechanical ones — sensor faults, infotainment glitches, camera failures. Nothing catastrophic, but frustrating.
- Resale value: Chinese brands depreciate significantly faster than established brands. A 3-year-old Chinese car typically loses 50-60% of its value, compared to 30-40% for Japanese equivalents.
- Dubai heat tolerance: Some models show rubber degradation, interior trim warping, and cooling system stress earlier than expected. The latest models seem better, but we don't have long-term data yet.
My honest advice: Chinese cars are a perfectly valid choice if you're buying new, keeping it within the warranty period, and you're okay with the depreciation. Where I'd be cautious is buying a used Chinese car out of warranty — repair costs and parts delays can be painful.

Brand-by-Brand Quick Assessment
| Brand | What We're Seeing | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| MG | Decent reliability, good dealer network in UAE. Parts availability improving. | Best established Chinese brand here |
| Chery (Tiggo) | Strong engines, some electrical niggles. Parts availability moderate. | Good value, improving fast |
| Haval | Solid SUVs but we've seen some gearbox concerns on DCT models. | Choose the non-DCT variants |
| Changan | Newer to market. Limited service data. Features-packed. | Wait for more market data |
| BYD | EV/hybrid technology is excellent. Battery and electric drivetrain very solid. | Leader in EV space |
Key Questions Before Buying
- Where is the nearest service centre? And how long are their wait times? Some brands have only 1-2 service centres in the whole of Dubai.
- What's the warranty coverage? Get the details in writing — what's covered, what's excluded, and what might void it.
- What's the resale value trajectory? Check Dubizzle for 2-3 year old models of the car you're considering. The depreciation might surprise you.
- Can independent garages service it? If the answer is "only the dealer," you're locked into their pricing forever.
What Our Customers Say
Real feedback about their multi-brand expertise
"We had a pre purchase inspection done by the PWG crew. As Australian expats we went with a recommendation from a friend that had a great experience with PWG and I couldn't recommend them enough. Glen was very clear, understanding and flexible and the inspection was turned around very quickly. Highly recommend power works if you're considering a pre purchase inspection. We'll be back for servicing after such a great experience."

"If I could give these guys 6 stars, I would. I came to Powerworks after terrible service at other local garages and realised, as many other people say on their reviews, I should have just picked the guys with the best reviews, first. Communication, service, knowledge, personality, everything about the garage and the space is completely on point. Diagnosed and repaired my Range Rover in 3 days, as where other local garages had her for 3 weeks and were nowhere near close to fixing her. From the biggest to the smallest jobs, I get constant updates and videos on the cars progress, I never need to wonder what's going on. They find parts that are either the best they recommend or budget friendly that can help the wallet."
Gus Napper
Range Rover owner"Before taking my car here, I took it to countless other garages which took them weeks of diagnosis, some to come back not even finding the issue. When a friend recommended that I take the car to Glen and the team, by the end of the day they had diagnosed and fixed the problem. Excellent service!"

The Bottom Line
Chinese cars are no longer the joke they were a decade ago. They're genuine contenders — especially for buyers who want maximum features and are buying new. But go in with realistic expectations about resale value and after-sales support. If you're considering one and want an independent pre-purchase inspection, bring it to Powerworks and I'll give you an unbiased assessment of what you're buying.
