Breaking down is stressful anywhere, but breaking down in Dubai — where summer temperatures hit 50°C and traffic moves at speed — adds a whole other level of urgency. I've been called out to hundreds of breakdowns over the years, and the biggest danger isn't the car problem itself, it's what people do (or don't do) in the first few minutes. Here's your survival guide.
Step 1: Get Off the Road Safely
- Turn on your hazard lights immediately — before anything else.
- Try to coast to the hard shoulder or nearest safe area. If your engine dies, you'll still have enough momentum to steer.
- Never stop in a live lane. Even if the car completely dies, try to push it to the side if it's safe to do so.
- On Sheikh Zayed Road or a motorway: Get as far left as possible (towards the barrier). Stay in the car with your seatbelt on if traffic is fast-moving.
Step 2: Make Your Car Visible
- Keep hazards on
- Place your warning triangle at least 50 metres behind your car (it's required by UAE law to carry one)
- At night: Use your phone torch or interior light so approaching drivers can see you
My honest advice: I always tell customers to keep three things in their car at all times: a warning triangle, a bottle of water, and a portable phone charger. In summer, add a small umbrella for shade if you need to stand outside.
Recovery & Emergency Services
Broken down? We offer car recovery across Dubai.
Step 3: Call for Help
You have several options:
| Service | Number | When to Call |
|---|---|---|
| Dubai Police (non-emergency) | 901 | You're blocking traffic or in a dangerous position |
| RTA Roadside Assistance | 800-9090 | Free tow on major roads within Dubai |
| Your insurance provider | Check your policy card | Most comprehensive policies include free roadside assistance |
| Powerworks Recovery | WhatsApp us | Flatbed recovery direct to our workshop |
Step 4: Stay Safe While Waiting
- In summer: Stay inside the car with AC on if possible. If the engine is off, crack windows slightly but lock doors. Dehydration can set in within 20 minutes in extreme heat.
- Never attempt roadside repairs on a motorway. It's not worth the risk.
- If you must exit: Always exit from the side away from traffic.

Common Causes of Breakdowns in Dubai
In my experience, the most frequent breakdown causes here are:
- Dead battery — the number one cause, especially in summer. Dubai heat destroys batteries in 18-24 months.
- Overheating — coolant system failures, especially if maintenance has been neglected.
- Tyre blowouts — underinflated tyres on hot roads are a recipe for disaster.
- Fuel system issues — running on empty or contaminated fuel.
- Alternator failure — car runs on battery power until it dies.
The overwhelming majority of breakdowns I see could have been prevented with a basic service and inspection. A AED 400 service can prevent a AED 400 recovery call plus an emergency repair premium.
Breakdown Prevention Checklist
- Replace your battery every 2 years in Dubai (not 4-5 like in cooler climates)
- Check coolant level monthly — takes 30 seconds
- Check tyre pressures fortnightly (do it in the morning before the heat)
- Don't ignore warning lights — they exist for a reason
- Keep at least a quarter tank of fuel at all times
If you've just broken down and need help now, WhatsApp us your location and we'll arrange recovery. If you want to make sure it doesn't happen again, book a health check and we'll go over everything.
